Background/Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency and symptom patterns of functional dyspepsia (FD) that satisfied the ROME II criteria and to determine the factors associated with this frequency in South Koreans.
Methods: A total of 708 (85.3%) subjects from among the 830 subjects who visited Chung-ang University Hospital for health check ups from April 2006 through September 2006 were included in this study. They were interviewed by using a questionnaire that covered the demographic features and symptoms, depending on the ROME II criteria, for FD.
Results: Among the 708 subjects, 167 subjects (23.6%) complained of chronic or recurrent dyspepsia. Among them, ninety-five subjects (13.4%) were diagnosed as FD and the frequency of FD in males and females was 9.0% and 16.1%, respectively. The most common subtype of FD was dysmotility-like dyspepsia (69.5%). The most frequent symptom was upper abdominal pain (61.1%), followed by fullness after eating, upper abdominal discomfort, early satiety, upper abdominal bloating, belching, nausea and vomiting. The frequency of FD was significantly higher in females, current smokers, and the normal weight subjects (BMI<25). Smoking and BMI were independently related with the presence of FD on multivariate logistic regression analysis (p<0.05). The frequencies of FD were not different in terms of age, alcohol intake, diabetes mellitus, a history of hypertension, Helicobacter pylori infection and NSAID use.
Conclusions: The frequency of FD was 13.4% according to the ROME II criteria in health check up subjects of our region. FD was more common in the current smokers and in the normal weight people.
